Royal Mail is encouraging people to send post well in advance ofits Christmas deadlines as its festive postbag is set to swell.
In a normal four-week period the firm handles 11.9 million piecesof mail in the CT postcode area, but this figure will soar to 18.1million in December.
Royal Mail, which is temporarily increasing its staff numbers by223 to take the total to 1,195 in the area, said the peak Christmasposting day would be Monday, December 13.
Last posting dates are December 18 for second class post,December 21 for first class and December 23 for special deliveryitems.
A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "Our Christmas postbag isexpected to be made up of around two billion cards and letters.
"As people continue the upward trend of internet Christmasshopping, Royal Mail expects to deliver over 165 million itemsordered online."
