CLOUD computing? ROZANA SANI gets some answers.
It is 9pm in Kuala Lumpur. Entrepreneur Joe Chan (not his real name) has just finished dinner at a mamak restaurant and is now enjoying his daily cup of teh tarik.
His smartphone beeps and he whips it out of his pocket. It's an email from his client in the UK. The client wants a quotation for a graphics design job and he wants it now.
From the phone, Chan accesses the appropriate file from his company's website and attaches it to his reply along with a sample copy of his most recent work.
As an afterthought, he logs on to his business page on Facebook and makes a note on the request on his Wall.
And he does all this without leaving the restaurant. Like many other people around the world today, Chan is on cloud computing.
Cloud computing is a technology that uses the Internet and central remote servers to maintain data and applications. It allows consumers and businesses to use applications without installation and access their personal files at any computer with Internet access. This technology allows for efficient computing by centralising storage, memory, processing and bandwidth.
The cloud for consumers, or "consumer cloud", evolves around subscription-based applications consumed at real-time by end-users, says IDC Malaysia Consulting senior research manager Sudev Bangah.
Bangah says IDC estimates that the rise of mobility devices in the country will play a crucial role in heightening consumer cloud adoption.
"In the US, when you talk about consumer cloud, Amazon, Windows and Rackspace come to mind as they bring storage and hosting easily and cheaply to consumers. My opinion is that there is a need for a firestarter within our midst, to develop the relevant content and application which will be useful for local consumers," he says.
Bangah adds that a local catalyst (i.e. a local apps developer) is someone who can really kick-start the game in the country. Till then, he feels the level of access to the "cloud" is via social networking websites and email via mobile.
View from a window
One of the first consumer application based on cloud computing is Hotmail, the first free web email service launched 15 years ago. Since coming under the wings of Microsoft Corporation, Hotmail has evolved significantly.
"We have added ever-growing email storage, web messenger, threaded conversations, the Office Web Apps free productivity suite, and more recently photo email, which allows users to send up to 10GB of photos per email. SkyDrive, has 25GB of free online storage for sharing Microsoft Office docs and photos," says Barrie Ooi, head of Windows Live, Consumer and Online, Microsoft Asia Pacific.
"More than two million Malaysians are using Windows Live Messenger every month. The latest version of Messenger allows users to aggregate other social sites into one view. I can, for example, aggregate my Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube updates into my Messenger," says Ooi.
He says Windows Live sees Hotmail leading the way from a communication and sharing perspective, especially with the recent uptake of smartphones. Hotmail has Exchange Active Sync capabilities, which enables any Hotmail user to have real time synchronisation of email, calendar and contacts.
Its easy usage means consumers will want to have one ID to do this. Imagine having a virtual key that unlocks everything you are online in one place.
Better collaboration
For Google, cloud computing makes two main things possible that are difficult with traditional software: Collaboration and access.
"You can edit a web-based document together at the same time, rather than sending it back and forth as an attachment. In terms of access, you can reach your stuff on any netbook, smartphone, or desktop PC," says Derek Callow, head of Marketing, Google Southeast Asia.
But ultimately, he says it's not about applications or devices, it's about people.
"Google aims to help people connect more easily and get more done. We view collaboration as a starting point, not an add-on feature of your applications. The beauty of the cloud is that you become stateless - you can access your stuff wherever you want, however you want."
Google has been pushing the technological bounds of cloud computing for more than 10 years with apps like Google Docs, which enables real-time sharing and collaborating on documents, spreadsheet and presentations, Gmail, which gives you enough storage online that you don't have to worry about deleting emails or saving them to your desktop, and browser, Google Chrome, which is tailored for the cloud.
This year, Callow says Google expects to see even more Malaysians taking advantage of the consumer cloud to live their lives online as they start to realise that the Internet is much more than a simple resource for finding information - it is a way to seamlessly communicate and collaborate with others across the globe.
Security factor
Storage and hosting capabilities aside, security often enters the minds of consumers of cloud computing.
"Cloud computing is a phenomenon that has taken off over the last decade. As the cloud becomes more widely used, more and more unscrupulous people will target it, says David Hall, regional consumer product marketing manager, Symantec, Asia Pacific.
"For instance, phishing emails are becoming more targeted because it is easier to find out more information about potential targets as so much information is being shared online. Just searching for a name on a social networking or business networking site can yield plenty of information. It's important to take time to check the privacy settings on any social networking site you use - this only takes a couple of minutes and can help make sure that you share information with the right people," he says.
While there are risks, consumers can take precautions by making sure their Internet security solution is up-to-date so they're protected from the latest threats.
Use a free search advisor tool like Norton Safe Web which helps you identify which sites are safe to visit. A downloadable toolbar for PC users warns you of unsafe websites right in your search results and automatically blocks them. This free toolbar is available at safeweb.norton.com/lite
It is also important to make sure that the devices you use to access information in the cloud are secured.
"Passwords are important and need to be in place on mobile devices. By setting a password and setting your smartphone to lock after a short time, casual snoopers won't be able to browse all the information that's connected to your device. It's a simple step that will help keep your information private even if it falls into the hands of a casual snooper or petty thief."
Norton also offers Norton Online Backup and Norton Insight as additional protection.
"As with all good things, there is also a flip side to cloud computing, so take time to consider if a site or application is one you know and can trust. As devices grow more sophisticated, it is inevitable that attackers will key in on mobile devices which will become a leading source of confidential data loss. Enterprises and consumers will require new security models to safeguard the sensitive data that will be on and accessible through these devices."

FED:PM calls for respect in marriage debate =6
Union official Joe de Bruyn called on delegates to support the motion for a conscience vote.
Mr de Bruyn, the national secretary of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees
Association, said he opposed changes to the party's platform.
"This issue is the one we should decide with our heads, not on the basis of emotion," he said.
"Let's look at some principles, the definition of marriage as set out in the legislation
is that it is the union of one man and one woman, voluntarily entered into for life.
"It has always been that way since the dawn of humanity."
Mr de Bruyn said there was no real argument to change the meaning of the word marriage.
"There have been appeals to equality, but that does not address the real issue, the
real issue that you need to argue convincingly for changing the meaning of marriage, that
has not been done," he said.

Vic: Memorial services of solidarity across state
By Edwina Scott
MELBOURNE, Feb 15 AAP - It was a phone call from Wandong resident Rose Dove that brought
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to church on Sunday.
For the first time since the Kinglake complex fire swept through the small town north
of Melbourne just over one week ago, hundreds of residents gathered for an open-air service
in a mark of solidarity and reflection.
The inferno that tore through Wandong destroyed 200 homes, with three people perishing
in the flames.
In Melbourne, several hundred people from 17 Christian churches across the city converged
in the Fitzroy Gardens after their Sunday morning services, praying for those who died
in the fires and those who lost their homes.
On the Wandong footy oval Reverend Carmel Hunter conducted the service on the back
of a Kenworth semi-trailer, flanked by Country Fire Authority (CFA) trucks from the Wandong
and Kilmore brigades.
Described by Mr Rudd as "a persistent lady", Rose telephoned Canberra on Friday and
invited him to the memorial service to ease the sense of desolation engulfing the tight-knit
community.
"[On] Thursday I saw people who were just so low ... He said he was very eager to come
down," she told AAP.
"I thought it was an impossibility ... I knew how busy his schedule was, but I said
it would mean a great deal to the community."
Rose, who works in diplomacy for the prime minister and cabinet in Melbourne, said
the non-denominational service was an opportunity to exchange stories and begin the healing
process.
"It's been very good for the people," she said.
"He [Mr Rudd] has recognised what we went through and also what our firefighters have done.
"I think the people who've lost the properties know now that they've got friends.
"I think it's to know that we're all willing to help.
"This doesn't stop here today, we'll be going on, we'll be fundraising..."
Religious ministers said a prayer for soaking rains and the bipartisan spirit of leadership
shown through the week was also acknowledged.
Mr Rudd joined locals singing Amazing Grace and placing gum leaves and flowers into
a bowl of water as a symbol of remembrance and rebuilding.
"What has happened here is the story of what has happened everywhere - but it's also
very special to you as a community," he told the crowd.
He vowed Wandong would be supported in their recovery.
"We will be with you every step of the way until this community is rebuilt," he said.
CFA volunteers, wearing orange overalls covered in ash, were thanked many times by
a grateful group during the moving ceremony.
"You put yourselves last and your community first," Mr Rudd declared.
On a lighter note, the prime minister remarked that Elvis was indeed still alive, referring
to the firefighting helicrane that dropped 9,000 litres of water as flames swept across
the region.
"Elvis is still with us," the PM said with a smile.

Fed: Rudd to push for reporting on schools
CANBERRA, Aug 27 AAP - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says school performance reporting
will be a condition for reaching an education agreement with the states.
Mr Rudd, in a key address to the National Press Club in Canberra today, says he expects
resistance to the move.
"We will be making agreement on individual school performance reporting a condition
of the new national education agreement to come into effect from the first of January,
2009," he said.
"I know some will resist these changes.
"There is little doubt that greater transparency will reveal some schools in Australia
may be seriously underperforming and have been struggling for some time."
The reporting is one of three central pillars of school reforms the federal government
aims to achieve late this year in talks with the states.

CANBERRA, April 22 AAP - A torch bearer's decision to drop out of the Canberra leg
of the Olympic torch relay over human rights concerns has not disappointed Foreign Minister
Stephen Smith.
Mr Smith says the move is a good example of peaceful protest.
Social justice advocate and ACT Australian of the Year Lin Hatfield Dodds was one of
those selected to carry the torch during the relay on Thursday.
But ongoing concerns about Chinese human rights abuses in Tibet convinced Ms Hatfield
Dodds to change her mind.
Mr Smith today said Ms Hatfield Dodds was setting a good example.
"I'm not disappointed at all in her conduct for this reason: it's a very good example
of peacefully making a point," he told reporters in Canberra.
"That's her point of view, she's entitled to it.
"She's entitled to make that point of view without anyone intimidating her.
Mr Smith said he hoped everyone who attended the event would follow that example.
"If you want to make a point about a personal view that you hold, make it, but make
it it peacefully."

BRISBANE, Aug 6 AAP - Queensland state cabinet has accepted all of the Local Government
Reform Commission's boundary recommendations, despite outrage on the coast and in the

The Local Government Reform Implementation Bill 2007 - which will cut the state's 156
councils to 72 - will be introduced to parliament tomorrow.
Premier Peter Beattie said the government hoped to pass the legislation by the end of the month.
"I know this is difficult, but this is good for Queensland and we have to persist with
it, because if we don't, then we will not have councils that can cope with the growth
that this state is facing," he told reporters in Brisbane today.
Cabinet also approved 22 of the commission's 25 recommendations to improve local government.
It rejected the recommendation that all councils should conduct elections on an undivided
basis, and will allow 26 of the new councils to use divisional boundaries at the March
2008 poll.
It also decided to establish an independent tribunal to set salaries for mayors and
councillors, and rejected a recommendation to suspend small boundary matters related to

'Mr. Integrity: 21 Months With A Catholic Con Man' Unlikely To Get Recommendation From Vatican Book Club.
CARLSBAD, Calif. -- CARLSBAD, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- According to author Wendy Quirk, the chronic woes of the Catholic Church have left the once-gilded hierarchy more recently perceived as having feet of clay. Now, along comes an unnerving tale from Quirk about a funny, handsome man who is a self-declared devout Catholic...and a professional con artist.
Under the guise of piety with a wily manner of manipulation, this con man bilked corporations and friends out of huge sums of money. Shortly afterwards, he married the wealthy Catholic heiress to the fortune of America's leading aerospace technology company just named "Company of the Year" by Forbes Magazine.
Quirk chronicles her relationship in frightening detail, explaining how he convinced prominent, heavyweight motorcycle event promoters that he was a national biker-event video producer. After hiring people to create and shoot the videos, he absconded with the funds, leaving most of the trusting vendors and promoters holding the bag, unpaid.
"My motivation was to expose the techniques of the con artist, and keep others from learning these lessons the hard way," Quirk explained. "I break down other cons and scams, describe manipulative behaviors that can raise red flags, and give a typical con artist profile. (Five key things to watch for are multiple drivers' licenses, no bank account, child support debt, bad credit, and instability.)
"Secondly, the book is a fundraising endeavor. I'm donating proceeds from the sale of 'Mr. Integrity' to pay the known creditors this con man abandoned without giving them a cent," Quirk stated.
Quirk "takes no prisoners," disclosing other scams and con artist behavior flourishing throughout the U.S. "Forewarned is forearmed," Quirk concluded. "I want people to be aware of what's out there, and how easy it is for someone who bases a relationship on mutual trust to get conned."
"Mr. Integrity: 21 Months with a Catholic Con Man" is distributed by Ingram Books, and is available on the Internet at http://www.mrintegrity.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. (Suggested retail list price $14.50.)

SENATE APPROVES GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY BILLS.
HARRISBURG, PA -- The following information was released by the Pennsylvania State Senate, State Senator Jane Orie (R):
I am pleased that the Senate approved two bills intended to make government at the state and local levels more transparent and open to the public.
Mandate Relief Bills Receive Senate Support
Many concerns expressed by local school officials involve state mandates. In response to those concerns, Senate Republicans introduced a legislative package earlier this year intended to relieve schools of costly, onerous and outdated state mandates. Four of those bills were approved by the full Senate this week:
Senate Bill 612 would allow school districts to furlough teachers based on economic reasons to control costs. Currently, if a school district faces a budget shortfall, it would have to eliminate an entire program, rather than furlough a teacher. Teacher seniority would be respected.
Senate Bill 857 would repeal an obsolete mandate requiring schools to use increases in basic education funding for new programs or expanding existing programs.
Senate Bill 858 would give school districts the option of hiring certificated superintendents (current law) or candidates with a graduate degree in business or finance. The legislation would allow districts to choose from a deeper pool of candidates to find the best person to oversee the education of students and manage the district's finances.
Senate Bill 872 would give school districts more flexibility to determine policies for students participating in dual enrollment programs, where high school students earn credit for college courses. SB 872 removes a requirement for school districts to establish a concurrent enrollment committee and relaxes some state mandates for schools. The legislation would require the school district to work with colleges to develop a mutual agreement on concurrent course selection.
Senate Approves "Safe Schools" Legislation
On Monday, the Senate passed a school safety measure that would establish tougher school hiring policies. Senate Bill 224 would establish a lifetime employment ban for those who have been convicted of serious violent offenses, including sexual violence and crimes against children. The bill would also prohibit anyone convicted of any other felony crime from working in a school setting for at least ten years.
Senate Approves Bill Banning Synthetic Drugs
Recently, we've heard disturbing reports of an evolving trend in our communities involving the use of synthetic drugs, commonly known as "bath salts." Bath salts and synthetic marijuana mimic the effects of powerful drugs and many of these drugs are available over the Internet or from local shops. These drugs are extremely dangerous. On Tuesday, the Senate passed legislation to ban these substances.
Senate Bill 1006 adds Salvia Divinorum, Salvinorin A, Divinorin A, synthetic marijuana, and synthetic cocaine/heroin to the list of Schedule I controlled substances. Salvia Divinorum has been shown to be a powerful hallucinogen. SB 1006 treats these substances the same as other Schedule I Controlled Substances and carries the same penalties as other non-narcotic Schedule I offenses.

More and more distributors are using online training to educate employees, according to a survey from BlueVolt.

Respondents were limited to sales, counter and customer service job titles and 94 percent completed the entire survey.
The company said the results show that online training increases sales and improves customer service. Eighty-one percent of respondents said that they sell more as a result of online training through BlueVolt, while 94 percent said their customers rely on them to recommend products or manufacturers. Eighty-nine percent said that they service their customers better as a result of online training.
Sixty-three percent said that they recommend products to customers at least once a day, and 92 percent said they learned valuable company or product information from their online universities.
Ninety-two percent said they would recommend the online university.
"This survey demonstrates what we always knew -that online training is a valuable and important asset to manufacturers selling through distributors," said Chad Hoke, vice president of sales. "The time-saving and cost-effective benefits make online training an indispensable resource and the survey results show our users agree with us."

Carriers See Over-The-Top Video as Way to Fill Holes in Offerings, Says ABI Research.
NEW YORK -- As cable providers beef up their PC video offerings, satellite and telco operators increasingly see over-the-top broadband video delivery as a viable option to shore up their own weaknesses. Over the past year, both DirecTV and DISH Network have rolled out over-the-top Video On Demand on Internet-connected set-top boxes, while telcos in Europe have been combining digital terrestrial linear TV broadcasts with broadband video for VOD. ABI Research believes that as broadband video offerings increase in quality and become more seamless, carriers could be significant players in the over-the-top video delivery market.
"Carrier-packaged over-the-top video delivery is a reality today in most markets," says research director Michael Wolf of ABI Research. "The fact is, broadband video is a way for some carriers to fill holes relative to larger closed-network operators such as cable MSOs, and we think over time more satellite, telco and European terrestrial operators will utilize broadband video delivery as a component of their overall offering."
2Wire's recent release of a carrier-targeted broadband video delivery set-top box is a sign that hardware manufacturers are also seeing a growth opportunity in this market. At the same time, cable operators such as Comcast are looking for ways to package broadband video to the PC as a way to combat potential growing interest in free ad-supported video delivery from portals.
"Comcast's early interest in being a Hulu syndication partner with its Fancast portal shows how MSOs are also interested in utilizing online video," notes Wolf. "While some MSOs will ultimately take a defensive stance using bandwidth caps or other measures, some also see a threat in offering nothing to their own customers in a world where free, ad-supported prime-time content is available to consumers via their PCs."
ABI Research's new study, "Over-the-Top Internet Video Strategies for Carriers" (http://www.abiresearch.com/products/market_research/Over_the_Top_Internet_Video_Strategies_for_Carriers) outlines the various strategies carriers can adopt to capitalize on the wave of broadband video services, thus turning a threat into an opportunity.
It forms part of two ABI Research Services, Digital Media (http://www.abiresearch.com/products/service/Digital_Media_Research_Service)and Multi-Channel Video (http://www.abiresearch.com/products/service/Multi-Channel_Video_Service), which also include other Research Reports, Research Briefs, Market Data, Online Databases, ABI Insights, Vendor Matrices, and analyst inquiry support.

Time for parents to choose schools for September.
Parents of pre-school children in Battle, Rye and across the county are being asked to select the school they would like their child to attend.
Admission booklets, containing a range of information and advice for parents of children born between September 2003 and August 2004, are being distributed during January and parents have until February 8 to express their school preferences.
Once again, as well as using the application form included within the booklet, parents can also apply online through the East Sussex County Council website.
The online system is quick, easy to use and available 24 hours a day.
Parents applying online will get an automatic acknowledgement by email of their application and can print a copy of the form they submit.
Parents are being encouraged to find out as much as possible about their preferred schools before making decisions and applying.
They can ask for a copy of the school's prospectus, contact schools for visits, and check the schools latest Ofsted inspection reports.
Three preferred schools can be listed on the form and while the county council admissions team makes every effort to try to meet a parent's wishes for their child to attend one of the three schools, a place at a particular school cannot be guaranteed.
Cllr Rupert Simmons, East Sussex County Council's lead member for learning and school effectiveness, said: "Clearly choosing a school is a very important decision for a parent to make and I would urge them to do as much research as possible before deciding on their preferences.
"We do always try to meet a parent's wishes and in the majority of cases this is possible."
The website address is www.eastsussex.gov.uk/admissions and the online service goes live on Friday January 11.
Families who don't have internet access at home can use the electronic information points provided by East Sussex County Council, or internet access in libraries, free of charge.
